Franchising and Earth Day
A partnership in sustainability, franchising can play an important role in supporting Earth Day and our environment, from local to global. Franchise expert Derek Cafferata shares his thoughts.
Celebrating Earth Day
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated all over the world on April 22. It is a day were individuals, groups, organizations and businesses can demonstrate their support for the protection and preservation of our environment. As we celebrate Earth Day, it is important to recognize the role that franchising can play in promoting sustainable business practices.
Franchising as a Proven Business Model
Franchising is a business model where a business owner, the franchisee, buys the rights to use the trademark, products, systems and business model of an established brand, known as the franchisor, in exchange for a fee. There is usually an up-front purchase costs, known as the initial franchise fee, and ongoing monthly royalty fees, as well as some other fees included throughout the process depending on the particular chosen franchise.
Franchising is a very popular business model for many entrepreneurs to start a business because it minimizes risk by leveraging established brands and utilizing the ongoing support from the franchisor.
Franchise expert Derek Cafferata, CEO and President of All State Franchise Finders has more than 30 years’ experience in the franchising industry in the United States and internationally.
“Franchising continues to grow in popularity and influence decade after decade,” says Derek. “You can find a franchise opportunity in virtually any business industry available, opening up so much opportunity for any person looking to be in business for themselves.”
Franchising Can Play a Role in Environmental Efforts
Many franchisors, both large and small, have taken significant steps to promote sustainability within their franchise systems. McDonald’s, for example, has committed to sourcing 100 percent of its coffee, palm oil and fish from sustainable sources. Subway has committed to sourcing only cage-free eggs by 2025. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and set a great example for other franchisors to follow.
“As well as sustainable sourcing, many franchisors are committed to implementing energy-saving initiatives within their franchise systems,” says Derek. “An example is the UPS Store, which has developed an energy management program to reduce energy consumption and costs.”
Other examples of energy-saving initiatives include use of LED lighting, occupancy sensors, as well as energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.
“The benefit that franchising has in support of our environment is that it has a unique ability to promote sustainability at a local level, but with a national, or even international, reach,” says Derek.
Franchises play a pivotal role in their local communities and can act as role models for positive change when it comes to best practices.
