Franchising and the LGBTQ Community
June is Pride Month and it’s exciting to see what is happening amongst the entrepreneurial LGBTQ community and the franchising industry.
June Pride Month
June is Pride Month in honour of the 1969 Stonewell uprising in Manhattan and it is a way for communities around the world to recognize the impact the LGBTQ community has locally, nationally and internationally.
The LGBTQ community have, for a long time now, positively contributed to business in many areas. Entrepreneurs within the LGBTQ community have worked hard to establish a number of organizations to help facilitate diversity and inclusivity in business, especially within the franchising industry.
Franchising Pride Council
Through the efforts of the International Franchise Association working closely with LGBTQ leaders, the Franchising Pride Council was established in 2019. The aim of the Franchising Pride Council is to support diversity and inclusiveness within all areas of franchising, from franchisors to franchisees to employees.
The Franchising Price Council (FPC) work with franchisors and franchisees to help identify best practices, promote diverse management, implement policies, offer sensitivity training for employees, offer access to resources and develop research to better help those in the franchising industry move forward together with the LGBTQ community.
Through the work of the FPC economic opportunities for the LGBTQ community are also expanded, with great opportunities for mentorship, sharing of information and connection through various forums and the like.
The franchise industry has always understood the importance of diversity in business, and the LGBTQ community plays a major role in this.
The Power of Diversity and Inclusiveness in Franchising
Diversity and inclusivity have proven to be extremely beneficial for business, and for franchising in particular. Business owners have found that when they have placed focus on diversity and inclusivity, they experience positive outcomes in all areas of business, including recruiting and employment, management, direction and customer connection.
Diversity within a franchise, or any business, defines who the business is. Inclusivity defines what the business chooses to be.
“A franchise that focuses on diversity and inclusiveness tends to stand out in a few areas,” says Derek Cafferata, CEO and President of franchise experts All State Franchise Finders. “These businesses tend to foster a caring workplace environment where employees are supported, engaged and feel connected, within a well organized and respectful workplace culture.”
