With the recent celebration of International Women’s Day, we take a look at female entrepreneurs and the importance they play in franchising.

International Women’s Day, which was celebrated recently on March 8, is a day where the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women are acknowledged around the globe. An important aspect of the women’s rights movement, International Women’s Day (IWD) brings to attention various issues women face, including violence against women, reproductive rights and gender equality.

This year saw IWD highlighting various issues, including celebrating tech women and innovation and building inclusive workplaces for women to thrive.

Franchising the Appealing Choice to Many Women

When it comes to women in business, franchising continues to prove that it is an appealing and very tangible option for many female entrepreneurs.

Franchising allows a business owner to be in business for themselves, but not by themselves. Much research has gone into the differences that women bring to business and their view of business. And this research shows that women tend towards being conscious of risk. While not risk-averse, women tend to take more calculated risks in comparison to their male counterparts.

“Franchising offers business owners the freedom to be in business for themselves, without having to start a business from scratch,” says Derek Cafferata, CEO and President of franchise experts All State Franchise Finders. “This is something that appeals to the female entrepreneur.”

Another reason that women find the franchise business model an appealing option is the flexibility it offers for family life and care responsibilities. Whether it is the ability to work outside the traditional nine-to-five workday or a work-from-home option, a franchise has set systems in place to enable more flexibility with daily work schedules, staffing and management.

The Move from Corporate to Franchising

The number of women moving into franchising continues to increase. Over the past decade, the percentage of female-owned or co-owned franchises has risen to over 35 percent, up from 24 percent 10 years ago. And when comparing statistics from the past few years of the number of solely female-owned franchises, this figure has risen by just over 40 percent.

One of the reasons for this is the increase of middle and upper management corporate roles being filled by successful, driven and innovative females. Experiencing opportunity and success in the corporate management sector is giving more and more women the confidence to head into business for themselves. And the franchising sector is benefiting.
