Minority groups are jumping on board with franchising, seeing an opportunity to create stable job opportunities for themselves and others.

The number of minority groups moving into the world of franchising is on the increase and this means some exciting things for both these minority groups and the franchising industry as a whole.

Minorities in Franchising: The Statistics

Minorities moving into franchising has been on the steady increase for the past 10 years. So much so that these “minority” groups are actually becoming the majority in many places. African American, Native American, Hispanic and Asian groups are finding a foothold in a wide range of business industries. And many franchisors looking to expand are seeing the benefit of attracting these minority groups to their particular business models.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there was an increase from 5.8 million to 8 million businesses owned by minority groups from 2007 to 2012, with a 46.3 percent rise in the number of Hispanic-owned businesses during this period and a 34.5 percent increase in the number of businesses owned by African Americans.

This increase means these minority groups are attracting more business ownership and employment into the franchise sector, at the same time as drawing a greater customer base as well.

Many franchisors are looking to attract minority groups to their business model and some even offer incentives, such as a reduction on franchise fees and/or royalty fees as well as assistance with financing.

Minority-Focussed Programs

A number of programs are available focusing on specific minority groups. In particular, the International Franchise Association (IFA) has set up two programs. The first is MinorityFran (also known as DiversityFran), modelled after the popular VetFran program. The second is the Diversity Institute, which offers informative educational seminars designed to help minority groups overcome common challenges faced in business.

Franchising specialists All State Franchise Finders, under the direction of President and CEO Derek Cafferata, work with numerous minority groups to offer the specialized support and information needed to make a smooth transition into the franchising world.

“As the makeup of our nation changes, so too does the world of franchising,” says Derek Cafferata. “ Those nationalities who were once statistically the minority in many parts of the country are now becoming the majority.”

Nationalities Changing the Face of Franchising

The biggest hurdles faced by minority groups looking to get into franchising include a lack of information, capital needs and relational issues, most likely arising from a mixture of cultural, social and language differences.

“The face of our country is changing and this change brings about exciting diversity and opportunity,” says Derek. “Minority groups becoming increasingly involved in franchising help to reflect the needs and wants of our society and our communities.”
